As part of my teacher training I have been taught how to teach various different forms of meditation, all with the same goal of learning to focus the mind, bring about stillness and live from the heart.

One of the 8 steps or limbs of Patanjalis yoga sutra, meditation has been taught for thousands of years to aspirants to focus the attention on a single point. Meditation or contemplation, the seventh stage of Ashtanga, the eightfold path, is the uninterrupted flow of concentration

There are lots of techniques that are called meditation that are a form of visualisation and the value of such tools is undoubted however it would not be considered meditation in the yogic sense.
